What is Head & Neck Cancer?
Head and neck cancers (HNCs) encompass malignancies of the oral cavity (lips, tongue, floor of mouth, cheeks), oropharynx (tonsils, base of tongue), hypopharynx, larynx (voice box), nasopharynx, and salivary glands. Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the most common type, accounting for >90% of cases. In India, oral cancers — heavily linked to tobacco and betel nut use — are among the most prevalent cancers overall. HPV-associated oropharyngeal cancers are increasing globally.
Symptoms & Early Signs
Early recognition of symptoms leads to timely diagnosis and significantly better treatment outcomes. Do not ignore these warning signs.
Oral Sore / Ulcer
A sore, ulcer, or white/red patch in the mouth that does not heal within 2–3 weeks.
Difficulty Swallowing
Dysphagia — painful or obstructed swallowing — is a common symptom of pharyngeal or laryngeal cancers.
Hoarseness of Voice
Persistent change in voice quality or hoarseness lasting more than 3 weeks — a key laryngeal cancer symptom.
Lump in Neck
A painless swelling in the neck — often an enlarged lymph node — may be the first sign of metastatic head/neck cancer.
Ear Pain (Referred)
Unexplained ear pain (otalgia) with no ear disease can indicate cancer of the pharynx or larynx.
Weight Loss
Significant unintentional weight loss and difficulty eating — often related to tumour obstructing the food passage.
Causes & Risk Factors
Understanding risk factors helps in early detection and prevention. Consult Dr. Gupta if you are at elevated risk.
Tobacco & Smokeless Tobacco
Cigarettes, beedis, gutka, khaini, and pan masala are the leading causes of oral and laryngeal cancers.
Alcohol Consumption
Heavy alcohol use synergistically increases risk when combined with tobacco — up to 30× higher risk.
HPV Infection
Human Papillomavirus (HPV-16/18) is a major cause of oropharyngeal (tonsil and base-of-tongue) cancers.
Betel Nut (Areca)
Chewing betel nut, particularly with lime or tobacco, causes oral submucous fibrosis that can progress to cancer.
Sun Exposure
Chronic sun exposure is a risk factor for lip cancers, particularly in outdoor workers.
Poor Oral Hygiene
Chronic trauma from sharp teeth, ill-fitting dentures, and poor oral hygiene may contribute to oral cancer.
Tobacco-Free India — Prevent Head & Neck Cancer
Over 90% of head and neck cancers in India are directly linked to tobacco use in some form. Quitting tobacco at any stage reduces cancer risk and improves treatment outcomes.
